Concerned
neighbors against the Silver Spring/Thayer alignment of the Purple
Line |
|
The
proposed Silver Spring/Thayer Purple Line route will:
-
Threaten
a large portion of Sligo Creek Park and the Sligo Creek
Watershed, home to diverse wildlife
and fish.
-
Take
portions of over 50 properties with no legal basis other than
through the lengthy and expensive eminent domain process.
-
Destroy
over 200 trees and one of the few significant tree
canopies near downtown Silver Spring.
-
Cross
in back of East Silver Spring Elementary School, where children
in Pre-kindergarten through 2nd grade attend. Two tunnels
openings are expected near the crosswalk.
-
Decrease
bus service on Thayer Avenue.
-
Widen
Thayer Avenue 8 Feet, allowing for 4 lanes of
traffic. This will eliminate on-street
parking. Children will have to cross 4 lanes of traffic to
get to East Silver Spring Elementary School.
-
Result
in such a circuitous route that ridership gains and greater
community benefits are in dispute.
-
Threaten
the viability of the East Silver Spring community, an
economically and racially diverse neighborhood.
-
Require
tearing down buildings on Fenton St. and Silver Spring
Ave, including the corner breakfast shop, the Globe hi-rise and
the R&R lighting building.
-
Result
in increased traffic delays and allow additional hi-rise
buildings with a proposed stop on Fenton St.
