Wireless Mini
When building a laptop on the HP website I chose an Intel Wireless-N Mini-card. Which wireless card is that?
When I built and ordered my laptop 6 months ago, I got an intel 5100 when choosing the Intel Wireless-N Mini-card. When I built my dads laptop 3 weeks ago, it came with an intel 1000 when choosing the Intel Wireless-N Mini-card. Both laptops are the dv4t. Did HP put a wrong wireless card into my dads laptop?
If they are both wireless N cards, then they are the correct cards. It is not unusual for the specific model or brand of an add on to vary within the same model. Sometimes the computer manufacturer can not get “model A”, so they use “model B” until A is available again.
We got in an order of 450 Dell computers for a site I was supporting. They were all the same model of a Dell. But about 2/3 of them had an IBM hard drive, while the others had a Seagate. However they were both 80 gb in size, so it meet the promised spec of an 80 gb drive. (Dell never promised us an IBM or a Seagate drive).
Same with the memory. These “identical” machines had three different brands of memory. But they all had the required 2 gb. So it meet the specs (2gb). They never promised us a certain brand.
For whatever reason, when your PC was made they were using the 5100 cards. When your dad’s was made, they were using the 1000 cards. As long as they are both Wireless-N, they meet the specs. They never promised you a specific model.
Since the PCs were made six months apart (a long time in terms of computer models), HP may have stopped making the 5100 model and replaced it with a newer 1000 model. Or they did not have any 1000s in stock, so you got a 5100 instead, but by the time your dad got his, they had the 1000 in stock again.
Neither is the “wrong” card – as they are both Intel Wireless-N. They are just not the same card.
