Is there any way to make an outdoor cat house?
My neighbors moved and don’t take care of their cat any more. I am feeding him but can’t let him in the house. He has always been an outdoor cat but was allowed in their garage. Because I can’t let him in, I need a way to make a cat house to keep him warm. I live in the south, so it doesn’t get too too cold. I cant afford to buy a cat house, so I need suggestions on how to create one. Thanks!
You need to protect him in several ways..
Height to give him a place to jump too in case of a threat, cover from the sun and rain, and sides to the cover so that you can protect him from the wind. Also, remember that you will have cat food outside and that can draw racoons and possoms.
I suggest you joing the yahoo group freecycle.org. My friend constructed a “cat house” from donated items rather eaisly.
1. she got a tall dresser, remove the 2 top drawers, take the bottom out of the top drawer( you can go as deep as the 2nd drawer) make sure the 2nd drawer is clear of any debris. put the drawers back into the dressor, pulled out to about half way. Line with a blanket. I nailed the drawers to the sides of the dressor from the inside out so that no one would shut the drawers on the cat. (it happened one time)
2. using deck screws, screw in 2 equal length peices of wood so that they stick up about 2 feet above the top of the dressor, do this for each of the sides, but make them about 3 to 6 inches lower than the two int he back.
3. Using wood staples or thin nails, nail a platic tarp into the top of the wood posts and along the sides, so that you have a “cover”. Place the food on top of the dressor under this cover as well as another blanket.
I wish I could give you a picture, but I think you get the drift. We spent a total of 20 dollars on materials and the dressor was free. She has it out back under her deck cover. She goes to the thrift store for blankets and towels to line the top and drawer. Painters tarp actually works better at insulating than just a regular tarp..
