Are the CCTV cameras we see in the street in London sesitive to infrared?
Would it be possible to obscure an object in a London CCTV cameras view by using high powered infrared LED’s?
The answer will not be used for any illegal purposes!
Good question!
In theory I think so based on 2 small experiments I have tried!
1) I placed an infra-red sensitive CCTV camera with integrated infra-red LED lights behind a window to record the area outside. The IR light bounced off the glass and obscured the picture.
2) If you have a camcorder or webcam, set the camera up to look at yourself. Then point a TV remote control at the camera and press a button. You will notice beams of infra-red light. (based on UK PAL video)
My conclusion is:
a) If a CCTV camera has an infra-red filter (for night vision), then an object bathed in infra-red light may create enough light to cause smearing or white out the object. Some cameras such as Baxhall Hyper-D may be able to compensate.
b) If even a home camcorder can see infra-red light, then it may be possible to block a normal cameras vision by directing infra-red light directly into the lens, but it would need to be a steady powerful beam of light.
