Sample Letter:

I am writing in concern of the proposed Silver Spring/Thayer Avenue alignment of the Bi-County Transitway (Purple Line).  The proposed route will impact East Silver Spring Elementary School,  affect the viability of the East Silver Spring community, threaten wildlife and fish in the Sligo Creek watershed, destroy over 200 mature trees, and take portions of over 50 properties.

  • East Silver Spring Elementary School will be directly impacted by the access tunnel for the Silver Spring/Thayer Avenue (SS/T) alignment. This causes concern about the safety of my children and the other children that attend the school. Please let me know how you intend to address this issue. In addition, according to Environmental Justice, aren’t you supposed to take actions to make sure that you do not negatively impact children?

  • The East Silver Spring community, especially the area impacted by the SS/T alignment, is an extremely diverse community. According to Environmental Justice aren’t you supposed to take actions to make sure that you do not negatively impact communities with diverse and minority populations?

  • There are a number of birds that maintain their sanctuary along the SS/T alignment. Please let me know how you plan to mitigate the impact on these important animals:

    • Mourning Dove, American Goldfinch, White-breasted Nuthatch American Crow Red-shouldered Hawk, Grackle, Red-tailed Hawk, House Finch, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Carolina Chickadee, Eastern Screech Owl, House Wren, Downy Woodpecker, White-throated Sparrow, Baltimore Oriole, Mockingbird, Tufted Titmouse, Red-headed Woodpecker, Belted Kingfisher, Song Sparrow, Black-throated Green Warbler, Cardinal, Dark-eyed Junco Wood Thrush, American Robin, House Sparrow, Yellow Warbler, Northern Flicker, Brown Thrasher, Pileated Woodpecker, Brown Creeper, European Starling, Carolina Wren, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Blue Jay, Cedar Waxwing

  • The SS/T alignment would have a number of terrible environmental impacts including the removal of numerous mature trees and the destruction of the Sligo Creek watershed. There are over 200 trees that would be destroyed that provide a natural canopy and help with regional cooling and air and water quality. The tunnel, especially at such a narrow depth, would block the natural runoff in the watershed which would have broad impacts. Have you studied how these concerns will be addressed in terms of the Chesapeake Bay Act, the Endangered Species Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the Construction Impacts study and your Cumulative Impacts Study?

Thank you for your time in reviewing the proposed issues.
